Engineers tackle the challenge, fun of skydiving without a plane

Vertical wind tunnels allow skydivers and amateurs who want the experience without the danger to practice free-fall air maneuvers only a few feet off the ground. But the tunnels are more than simple fans in a tube, posing engineering problems associated with holding down the tremendous noise and keeping recirculated air from heating up, challenges that have been addressed by Freddy Leal and classmates at Florida International University.
