Reversing economists' predictions of a decline, the number of Americans applying for initial jobless benefits jumped to a four-month high last week, the Labor Department reported. The 28,000 gain may have been distorted by holiday factors, but "what we do know is that the [jobs] growth momentum has slowed, employment has slowed. The question is how much?" said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities.
