Listening to patients honed doctor's views on palliative care

Dr. Vyjeyanthi Periyakoil said listening to patients helped her develop a more comprehensive approach to end-of-life care that has made her a leader in the palliative care movement. Periyakoil, director of Stanford University's palliative care fellowship program, said palliative care should be woven seamlessly into patient treatment plans but noted cultural issues can prevent or delay patients' entry into palliative and hospice programs.
