Probe finds 3 N.C. hospitals reaped millions from drug discounts

An inquiry by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, found that three North Carolina nonprofit hospitals earned millions from the 340B drug discount program for low-income and uninsured patients. Duke University Hospital reportedly netted an additional $48.3 million in 2012 by charging patients with insurance higher prices for the discounted drugs. Grassley questioned whether other U.S. hospitals are acting similarly.
