Smart-grid pioneers ride the coattails of rural broadband

Emerson is leading an industry effort to use rural broadband expansion to propel advances in the smart grid through a recently announced partnership with Georgia electric cooperative Habersham. Together with EnerSphere -- a provider of connectivity products -- and energy management firm Jetlun, Emerson is using $1.5 million in federal aid to test its smart appliances, including a thermostat-IHD combo and a smart water heater.
