Discovery nets to learn whether fiction plays better than truth

Discovery Communications is making its first moves into scripted programming. Flagship Discovery Network is set to air "Klondike," a series about the gold rush in a frontier town, while Science Channel will show "73 Seconds: The Challenger Investigation," a scripted dramatic feature about the space shuttle disaster. The addition of scripted content reflects the TV business "truth" that such programming "has more of a shelf life after its first on-air run, while reality shows are a harder sell," Brian Steinberg writes.
