European regulators seek to promote plastics recycling, urge REACH compliance

The European Commission is planning draft legislation to increase plastics-waste recycling and seeks the support of plastics firms. The commission wants to know "whether, and how, existing legislation should be adapted to deal with plastic waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery of plastic waste over landfilling." Separately, the European Chemicals Agency is urging plastics producers to voluntarily conduct safety assessments as part of the second registration phase for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals program.
