Michigan community college adopts merit pay

Faculty members at Grand Rapids Community College in Michigan have agreed to a merit-pay system, under a new contract valid through the 2015-16 school year. The new contract freezes salaries for two years and grants raises based on performance with faculty rated in five categories, including teaching, professional development and student service. "This new evaluation system gives faculty members a large menu of non-teaching -- but academic -- services they'll need to perform on a daily basis for satisfactory employment," the school's president, Steven C. Ender, said.
