More states are moving to Medicaid managed care to save money

The number of prescription drugs covered by a Medicaid managed care plan instead of fee-for-service more than doubled from September 2011 to June 2012 as states shifted their approach in an effort to save money and do a better job with preventive care, according to the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics. Medicaid managed care plans handled 4.9 million prescriptions monthly in 2011, compared with 12.5 million in 2012. The study, which covered four states and three therapeutic classes, found an increase in generic drug utilization and regional discrepancies in prescribing practices.
