More than a dozen "preliminary alternatives" are being considered by the Federal Railroad Administration to enhance rail service in the Northeast Corridor. The agency's "NEC FUTURE: A Rail Investment Plan for the Northeast Corridor, Preliminary Alternatives" report states some big projects are under consideration -- such as increasing speeds to 220 mph on Amtrak's line between Boston and Washington. But smaller upgrades are also being considered. The agency will pare the list over the year into a set of "reasonable alternatives."
