Research study seeks to reduce carbon footprint of concrete

Yixin Shao, a civil engineering associate professor at McGill University in Montreal, is studying how "to capture and sequester carbon dioxide from the cement manufacturing process and inject it into the curing cycle of concrete masonry blocks and concrete board." This would be a substitute for steam used in the curing process and actually hastens the finishing process and creates a stronger product. Although not yet a commercial prototype, Shao believes the carbon-capture technique could become a "cost-effective replacement" to steam.
