Sonic swirl maneuvers objects at microscopic scale

A sonic vortex produced by 16 ultrasound sources has been used to first surround and then maneuver microscopic objects. The method, developed in the U.K. by researchers at the University of Bristol Department of Mechanical Engineering and the University of Dundee Institute for Medical Science and Technology, is harmless to the objects involved and can be useful in positioning individual cells or in human tissue engineering.
