Researchers racing to discover best biofuel technology

Researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area are working on a variety of innovations for biologically derived transportation fuels. Federal officials have said their goal is to have 30% of transportation fuel coming from biofuels by 2030. Chemistry, genetic engineering and synthetic biology are the main fields of research, and technologies being investigated include using microbes found in termites to turn plant matter into ethanol and using algae to produce oil.
