Can you rely on your pension plan?

Traditional pension plans are still available to 87% of public workers in the U.S., and while private-sector offerings are shrinking, 35% of Fortune 1000 companies still sponsor such plans. But workers with these benefits should tune in to the health of their plans by paying attention to their funded status, and should keep records of their employment, Mark Miller writes. They also should consider an annuity instead of a lump-sum payment.
