Patients with heartburn at night often also experience wakefulness, arousal from sleep and poor sleep quality, according to the American College of Gastroenterology. Experts say avoiding big meals and trigger foods close to bedtime, elevating the head of the bed -- not just using additional pillow -- and controlling weight are ways to avoid acid reflux.
