$1B Port of Miami Tunnel: A technically challenging project

This article details some of the challenges faced by contractors working on the $1 billion Port of Miami tunnel project and looks at the methods and strategies used to resolve them. Challenges include a congested urban setting and complex geology as crews build "cross passages and complete tunneling through eight different layers of earth using both the earth-pressure-balance method (EPBM) and water-controlled pressure, also called hydraulic mucking." The tunnel is the first large-diameter tunnel that will be "bored through coralline limestone."
