App downloads soar, with Apple holding revenue edge over Google

The four leading mobile application markets accounted for 11% more downloads globally in the first quarter than in all of 2012, according to the Canalys research firm, which estimated paid app sales at $2.2 billion from 13.4 billion downloads in Q1. Google accounted for 51% of the downloads, but 74% of total revenues emanated from Apple's App Store. Apple accounted for 40% of downloads, with BlackBerry and Microsoft showing single-digit percentage shares.
