NIH director explains the BRAIN to the Colbert Nation

The human brain is the most complicated biological structure in the known universe, with 86 billion neurons that each make a thousand or more connections, NIH Director Francis Collins explained to comedic TV news anchor Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report. Collins is directing the Obama administration's new BRAIN initiative, which aims to map the brain's connections to understand how they work at the speed of thought. By learning how the brain works, we have a much better chance of helping the 100 million Americans who suffer from a brain disorder such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, autism and schizophrenia, Collins said.
