Patent trolls are a hindrance to tech, companies say

Several tech companies have asked government agencies to act against "patent assertion entities" -- so-called patent "trolls" -- which the complainants allege cost U.S. businesses nearly $30 billion directly in 2011. Google, BlackBerry, EarthLink and Red Hat on Friday petitioned the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, seeking their intervention against these patent holders and saying they crimp innovation, especially among small businesses.
