Study: Critical-access hospitals have higher mortality rates

A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found mortality rates have increased at critical-access hospitals, which often are in rural areas, even as they declined at other hospitals. Harvard School of Public Health researchers suggested critical-access hospitals struggle to afford the best technology and specialists. Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and Kansas are among the states with the most critical-access hospitals.
