Alternative investments are rare in target-date funds

Many investors say they are interested in including alternative investments in their retirement portfolios, but cost might be keeping some asset managers from including them in their target-date funds. "If an investment committee is looking for a suite of target date funds that use alternatives to manage risk or enhance return, few fund families would [have one]," says Jim Phillips, president of Retirement Resources Investment.
