Communities save money using volunteer firefighters

There are fewer volunteer firefighters today than a decade ago, but volunteer forces are more ethnically and socially diverse than ever, firefighters say. Towns should recognize that having a volunteer squad saves millions of dollars and "take care of their volunteers," said Robert Moon of the Westchester County Volunteer Firemen’s Association in New York. Departments that rely on volunteers must continually recruit and train new firefighters.
