Iowa student leads effort to change the name of Columbus Day

Naming Oct. 14 as Columbus Day is inaccurate, according to Rachel Rinehart, an Iowa City high school senior. Rinehart is leading a group of Iowa City high-school students to rename the holiday to Discovery Day with the idea of recognizing contributions of Vikings and Native Americans in the discovery and exploration of North America. Rinehart has collected 700 signatures toward a goal of collecting 1,000 of them for a petition before sending it to Gov. Terry Branstad and local lawmakers.
