McConnell calls in FBI to probe possible campaign bugging

04/9/2013 | NBC News

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is asking the FBI to investigate after a recording of a private campaign strategy session was leaked to the press. The recording was published by Mother Jones magazine and involves discussion of a possible challenge by actress Ashley Judd. The campaign denies that any of its own people released the recording. "Obviously, a recording device of some kind was placed in Sen. McConnell's campaign office without consent. By whom and how that was accomplished will presumably be the subject of a criminal investigation," said McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton. McConnell, who is the Senate minority leader, is running for a sixth term in 2014.
