The risk of malignant melanoma in large congenital nevi is about 2%, the mortality rate from melanoma during childhood or adolescence is about 13%, and satellite nevi were present in about 90% of childhood melanoma cases, a review of studies found. Studies drew different conclusions regarding the value of sentinel lymph node biopsy in pediatric melanoma. Tumors tend to be thicker and sentinel node positivity rates higher when the illness hits before puberty.
