New standard accelerates move toward nationwide 9-1-1 text service

Telecommunications groups have released a standard to allow texts to 9-1-1 in areas where Short Message Service to 9-1-1 is not yet available. Major wireless providers that collaborated on the standard have told the Federal Communications Commission they expect to have a functional text-to-9-1-1 solution established by May 15, 2014.
