Program turns Ill. middle-school students into legislators

Seventh-grade students at Elm Place Middle School in Highland Park, Ill., took on the roles of legislators during a mock legislative session devoted to discussions of student safety concerns. As a part of Project Citizen, students researched and spoke to a panel of local leaders about issues including Internet safety, bullying, building safety and even sports-injury prevention. "Project Citizen is valuable because students learn how to research, then practice brainstorming solutions and analyzing each solution's feasibility," social studies teacher Christopher Hull said.
