Study finds best drugs for pediatric intra-abdominal infection

The best antimicrobial drugs to treat gram-negative bacteria from pediatric intra-abdominal infections are amikacin, imipenem and ertapenem, researchers reported in the Pediatrics Infectious Disease Journal. Dr. Samir Shah commented it was not surprising the study found antibiotic-resistant bacteria were more common in children admitted to intensive care units because they tend to get antibiotics and have longer hospital stays, raising the risk of being colonized with resistant bacteria.
