Va. elementary-school students learn about Chinese culture, language

Students at Rawls Byrd Elementary in James City, Va., are getting a chance to learn about Chinese history, language and culture through a partnership with the nearby Confucius Institute at the College of William and Mary. Rawls Byrd principal Cathy Vazquez said educators from the institute have been helping fifth-grade students learn Mandarin Chinese, and second-grade students have been learning about Chinese history, culture and geography, lessons that align with the Virginia Standards of Learning exams.
