When is giving up tenure the right career move?

Giving up tenure may seem unthinkable to some faculty, writer Anne Trubek, who gave up her tenure at Oberlin College, found it sometimes brings a sense of relief, even envy from other faculty members. The pressure to stay is strong, Trubek writes, but when another career beckons, the choice becomes clear. "My interests have evolved, and I am simply moving along with them. I am not diverting or opting out or making a statement by resigning my tenured post," she writes.
