La. hospital reduces NICU admissions with early birth initiative

After the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals launched an initiative to discourage elective deliveries before 39 weeks, NICU admissions at East Jefferson General Hospital have fallen by 20%. East Jefferson was the state's first hospital to adopt the initiative. Dr. Ann Chau said fetal development from weeks 35 to 40 weeks is substantial, and underdeveloped lungs are the main reason babies are admitted to the NICU.
