Microsoft to bolster IP holdings with $1 billion patent buy

Microsoft announced it will pay $1.3 million apiece for 800 AOL patents, as it seeks to solidify its intellectual property holdings. The patents -- which will cost the software giant more than $1 billion in all -- cover technologies including Internet search, e-mail, online advertising and instant messaging, according to analysts.
