MedPAC calls for higher Medicare pay for NPs, PAs

Medicare should consider increasing pay rates for advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants and work on abolishing state barriers that prevent them from practicing independently, according to some members of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission. Medicare should pay appropriate rates for the same work, regardless of whether it's performed by APRNs, PAs or doctors, said Dean Health System President and CEO Dr. Craig Samitt. "We know from evidence that we have the same quality outcomes -- 30 years of evidence -- on ... advanced practice nurses," said Mary Naylor of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.
