New microalgae process produces tailored oils

A process that grows microalgae in darkness -- with energy supplied by plant-based sugars rather than sunlight -- produces oil at commercial scale. Solazyme says that its technique produces 80% oil from each cell and that the oils can be tailored for multiple uses, ranging from cosmetics to energy.
