Senators to announce deal on background checks

Two senators are ready to announce a deal on expanding background checks for gun ownership, aides say, paving the way for a Republican-backed gun-control bill. The deal, struck by Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, a conservative Republican, and West Virginia's pro-gun Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, would expand background checks to cover all commercial deals, including gun shows, but would have exemptions for private sales between individuals. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., says he still plans to filibuster the bill, while Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., called on his colleagues to allow the Senate to vote on the measure.
