Study: Readmission data should include post-discharge ER visits

Medicare is missing critical factors in post-hospital health care because its readmission data do not include discharged patients who return to the emergency room but are not readmitted, according to a study in the Annals of Emergency Medicine. University of Pennsylvania researchers said to fully understand the cause of readmissions, Medicare should consider patient visits to the emergency room within 30 days of hospital discharge.
