U.K. golf club criticized for planning Open at men-only course

American activist Martha Burk, who led the fight against Augusta National's males-only policy, is now calling out the Royal & Ancient golf club for preparing to host the U.K.'s Open at a club which refuses female members or guests. "It's going to be harder and harder to defend to the public, to lawmakers who may directly or indirectly provide resources, and to sponsors," Burk says. "The R&A, as a ruling body of golf, could end the controversy by simply declaring clubs that discriminate are ineligible to host official tournaments." R&A members counter that single-sex membership at private clubs is not illegal.
