Experts say geography is about much more than memorizing facts and place names, with the field now encompassing "the spatial organization of phenomena -- the where, what and why," said University of Oregon geographer Alexander Murphy. Modern geographic techniques have been used for purposes such as tracking wildfires and monitoring violence against civilians. In addition, geographic systems have "democratized travel by letting people take trips led by their own interests," said Joy Adams, a senior researcher for AAG.
