Locomotive plans of Class I's spur competition among rail suppliers

CSX and Union Pacific are among the Class I railroads with plans to invest in new locomotives, creating a rush among rail equipment suppliers to secure potential business. For instance, Caterpillar and General Electric are developing ways to improve locomotive services for rail companies. Rail is considered as much as four to five times more energy-efficient than trucks in long-haul shipping, according to Noel Perry, FTR Associates economist.
