U.S. jobless-benefit claims decline

First-time U.S. unemployment-benefit claims declined to 346,000 last week for a larger-than-expected drop, the Labor Department reported. The new number reverses a slowing in payroll gains last month. Meanwhile, U.S. consumer confidence was little changed, with growing pessimism at the low end of the economic scale and more optimism at the top.
