Why annual heartworm testing is important

Annual heartworm blood testing is recommended for all dogs, even those whose owners insist they haven't missed a monthly dose of their preventive treatment, according to veterinarian and past president of the American Heartworm Society Sheldon Rubin, who adds that the FDA supports the recommendation for annual testing. Dogs may not actually swallow pills they are given, and topical treatments can be misapplied. Dr. Rubin explains that giving an infected dog a dose of preventive treatment may cause a serious reaction in the animal.
