Supply of veterinarians may outpace demand in Iowa

Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine recently increased its class sizes and is getting more applicants, but practitioners in the state say there isn't a need for large growth in the number of veterinarians due to low job availability. Others believe that nationwide, baby boomers' retirements will open up private practice jobs, and large-animal veterinarians are in demand, as are those in careers including public health, disease control, and animal and food safety, says Tom Johnson, executive director of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association.
