DVD player finds second life as blood-scanning microscope

Low-cost blood testing for the developing world may soon be possible with modified DVD players. Scientists in Stockholm at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology's School of Biotechnology have used a standard DVD player to make a laser-scanning microscope that can detect specific cells in blood samples and diagnose HIV and other conditions.
