Experts weigh in on used nuclear fuel management

Several nuclear energy experts weighed in on the Department of Energy's proposal for interim storage sites for used nuclear fuel. The plan eliminates the incentive to search for a repository for the material, which would ensure that no such site would be developed, said Jack Spencer, senior research fellow for nuclear-energy policy at the Heritage Foundation. Designating at least one centralized storage site for the material, however, would be reasonable while authorities resolve the issue, said Richard Lester, head of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's department of nuclear science and engineering.
