Mich. district to add eighth-grade academies, single-gender courses

Southfield Public School District in Michigan has partnered with Wayne State University to redesign the district's secondary schools. The revamp, announced Thursday, includes eighth-grade academies, some single-gender core academic classes and dedicated wings for ninth-grade students at some schools. "We spent months looking at the data -- test scores and demographics, and said 'we need to do something differently.' Schools need to be designed to help students," said superintendent Wanda Cook-Robinson.
