New York City arms cops with Android-based devices in test

New York's Finest have been carrying Android smartphones on the beat as part of a police department field trial that involves more than 400 officers. The handsets provide only data -- no calls in or out -- and are designed to speed access to critical information such as a person's criminal record, vehicle registrations and photographs. The phones are said to be more informative and speedier than the computer-based systems patrol cars generally access.
