TVA notes challenges for new safety standards for Tenn. reactor

Fulfilling post-Fukushima Daiichi safety requirements is among the major challenges in the Tennessee Valley Authority's construction of the Watts Bar Unit 2 reactor in Tennessee, said Mike Skaggs, TVA's senior vice president for nuclear construction. The unit will be the first U.S. reactor to be finished after the incident in Japan. "We're pretty much at the front of the nuclear industry in installing it [the new emergency equipment and procedures], and we're having to learn as we go," Skaggs said.
