U.S. needed to fund MEADS missile, Hagel says

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel says it's the contractual obligations of the U.S., and not the merits of the Medium Extended Air Defense System missile defense, that prompted the Pentagon to fund the project. "I'm not here to defend MEADS," Hagel said this week at a House Armed Services Committee hearing. The Pentagon's lawyers, Hagel said, have told him the U.S. is "obligated to finish that contract as a result of the appropriations" bill, and as a result, the DOD funded it with $380 million.
