Two groups seek licenses for new U.S. nuclear plants

After a long lull in nuclear activity in the U.S., two separate groups of utilities and reactor suppliers have announced plans to pursue combined construction and operating licenses from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for new plants. In one plan, a consortium of four U.S. companies and a French company have teamed with Westinghouse and GE Energy to develop a license application to be submitted in 2008, and the other plan comes from Dominion Resources of Richmond to build a plant near its existing North Ana plant site in Virginia.
