Downturn spurs efforts to split equity research, broking

Brokers and investment managers have not entirely separated equity research and broking services into two businesses, but the economic downturn is helping financial regulators in the UK and the US push such efforts. A recently published report shows that reforms by the UK's Financial Services Authority have had an effect, although it also shows that arrangements between brokers and investment managers to split research costs have become popular.
